2010
OFFICIAL SCHEDULE
THURSDAY 5 AUGUST :
Night
of the Louisiana Film
At
Cinema Etoile, 20 rue la Halle au Blé, 21210 Saulieu
Seating is limited. No advance ticket sale
17:00
- 18:30 : "The Princess and the Frog" (3,50€)

The return of Disney to old fashion hand made cartoons was hailed
by critics and public alike. A poetic tale taking place in the bayous
and the French Quarter of the roaring 20's, this very musical film
is enhanced by a score and songs by Louisiana's own, Randy Newman,
throwing in jazz, zydeco, blues and gospel. With the Dirty Dozen Brass
Band and Buckwheat Zydeco.(In English with French subtitles)
20:30 - 24:00 : (12€)
"Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler" (Heidi
Bordogna, 2010).
Mardi Gras celebrations in various communities of Acadiana as seen
by an assistant communication teacher at the University of Louisiana,
Heidi Bordogna who directed a crew mostly made of students and former
graduates. Beautiful footage and a lot of fun.
"Mardi Gras Made in China" (David Redmon,
2008)

In New-Orleans as well as in Lafayette, huge quantities of Mardi Gras
beads are being thrown but where do they come from ? On Bourbon Street,
nobody seems to care. A stunning and sometimes humorous tale of globalisation
from the bacchanalian excess of the French Quarter to the sweatshops
of China where exploited teenagers are paid 10 cents a day.

"Nos
Cousins de Louisiane" (Alex Décotte, 2010)
A world traveler and reporter based near Geneva, Alex Décotte
went to Louisiana to meet a dying bred, the proud French speaking
Cajuns who don't give up the fight.
"Congo
Square, Sacred Place of the Houmas"
(André Gladu, 2005)
Under the watchful eye of Quebecois filmmaker André Gladu,
tireless defender of the Louisiana culture, two French speaking musicians
members of the Houma tribe, Calvin Parfait and Charlie Duthu trade
songs and stories on their sacred grounds, Congo Square, in the Trémé
neighborhood of New Orleans, where, in colonial times, the slaves
where allowed to congregate, play music and dance every Sunday.
"Another
look at "In the Electric Mist" and musical clips"
(Christine Louveau de la Guigneraye, 2010)
Anthropologist, musician and filmmaker, Christine Louveau de la Guigneraye
believes in culture jamming and loves to recycle old footage in her
"Cajun" clips. She also had the idea to compare a few sequences
of two versions the French and the American ones) of Tavernier's feature
film In the Electric Mist. Discover how color grading and editing
can change a film.
"La Louisiane sous les Bombes" (Marc Oriol,
2009)
When Bombes 2 Bal, a joyful Occitan folk music band from Toulouse
travels to Louisiana to attend Jazz Fest, the Balfa Camp and to jam
at Festival International with Bonsoir Catin, it can't be dull, especially
when Marc Oriol is filming.
"It’s
In the Blood : Leo Abshire and Cajun Tradition" (Eric
Scholl & Cyndi Moran, 2007).
In the little community of Gueydan, LA, Leo Abshire, a cousin of the
late Nathan Abshire, is a well respected fiddle player and luthier.
Two young filmmakers from Chicago, Eric Scholl and Cyndi Moran paint
an affectionate portrait of a man commited to keeping his music alive
and passing it to the next generation.

bands :

BONSOIR
CATIN (USA)
Bonsoir,
Catin plays authentic cajun music that is energetic, passionate and
heart-felt. Band members Christine Balfa Powell, Kristi Guillory,
Yvette Landry, Anya Shoenegge Burgess and Jude Veillon go together
like peas and carrots, beer and boudin. It
happened one night in Chicot State park around
a campfire. Four girls, all friends, playing music and visiting until
the early morning hours. They realized that they shared the same vision
that Cajun music should be unafraid and unabashed, full of energy
and raw emotion. Since that night, Bonsoir, Catin has emerged as one
of South Louisiana's most exciting new Cajun bands.
FEUFOLLET
(USA)
Although Feufollet has often
been hailed as the future of Cajun music, a more current assessment
must admit that they are now the present of Cajun music. Once idolized
at at early age for their precocious musicianship and sent all over
the world as youthful emblems of Acadiana’s cultural resurgence,
the members of Feufollet have, in the meantime, grown into the music
as young adults. While Feufollet remains central to the neotraditionalist
brush fire they helped ignite as youths, their latest album finds
the band coming into its own and pushing the envelope, leading the
way once again as Cajun music extends itself into a new century.

Each
August, for the past 16 years, thousands of people attracted by Cajun
and Zydeco music will gather in the small town of Saulieu (Burgundy),
France to share great moments of music, dance, cinema and gastronomy
at the Cajun & Zydeco Music, Film & Food Festival.
In 2010, the Festival will celebrate its 17th anniversary, a good
occasion for having a great time and great bands !
The stars of this year's 2010 edition will be
BONSOIR
CATIN
FEUFOLLET
Those musicians are among the most outstanding in Louisiana for their
quality.
Supporting the great festival music line-up will also be Sarah
Savoy & the Francadians, The Cajun Company (NL),
Z-Funk (GB), Lil' Jim's Big Squeeze (GB),
and the French groups of Bal de Maison, Bayou Chicot,
Cajun Express & C° et Blue Bayou.
The 10th edition of the Saulieu Louisiana Film Festival,
mastered by filmmaker Jean-Pierre Bruneau, will be
presenting film projects of music, history and culture of South Louisiana
on Thursday night 5th August.
An extensive training course of C/Z dance (conducted
by dance instructor teams of Yann Manac'h, Marilyn Catrix,
Sylviane Jean and Bernard Guihard)
and cajun instruments (conducted by instructors
Eric
Martin,
Vincent
Giarrusso
and Christian Gualdi) will be held on Saturday.
(see
e-mail address above for registration)
As
for gastronomy, Michael Richard, the well renowned
Chef from Lafayette, Louisiana, will be cooking his Cajun specialties
at the 'Espace Restaurant' on Saturday and Sunday.
Finally,
the Festival will be extended beyond the regular weekend to Monday,
August 9th where we will move several miles down the road for a 'Louisiana
Night' at the club 'Le Cornemuse' in Arleuf
(20 miles distance) where Sarah Savoy & the Francadians
(USA/F) and Cajun Company (NL) will perform
again.
The Saulieu area has a lot to provide in regards lodging
(top quality hotels, bed & breakfasts and campsites), food and
landscapes (gentle mountains and lakes of the Morvan area). All the
different festival locations are centered and can be reached on foot
in less than five minutes. From the Paris airports, it's very easy
to get to Saulieu by high speed train and bus.
