5 PM : "Belizaire, the Cajun" (3,50 Euros) (1986) by Glen Pitre -In English with French subtitles-

25th anniversary re-release.

Belizaire the Cajun is back in Saulieu. Come enjoy the movie that made it cool to be Cajun. Now a classic, the first all Cajun feature film is also a western and a pretty good one taking place in the 1860's and telling the story of Belizaire, the treater or healer, fighting the anglo " vigilantes" trying to chase the Cajuns away from the bayou. Selected at Cannes Film Fest, the film came to life thanks to Robert Redford and Robert Duvall. Music by Michael Doucet and Beausoleil.

Cajun Evolution by Martyn Thompson (60') 2011, In English, French subtitles.

Martyn Thompson is from New Zealand. He teaches at the U of Louisiana in Lafayette, married a Cajun girl and digs all francophone cultures and lifestyles. At he end of the '70s he even played professional rugby in a Burgundy team and is back tonight to attend the screening of his documentary that shows the evolution of the Cajun people during the last 80 years. Soundtrack by some Saulieu favorites such as Feu Follet, Bonsoir Catin & Cedric Watson.

Crawfish King (60') 2010, by Connie Castille & Allison Bohl

Two of the most talented women filmmakers of Acadiana had the good sense to film the wonderful crawfish festival in Breaux Bridge and to go beyond the celebration showing the culinary and the economic role of this legendary mudbug , inseparable of the Cajun way of life.

Zydeco Breakfast @ Café des Amis , collective film, 2011, 30'

Located a few miles from Lafayette, on the banks of the Bayou Teche, Breaux Bridge has become a Mecca for artists and musicians. Its best known landmark is the celebrated Café des Amis famous for its zydeco breakfast, a truel American sensation.

Drew Landry, Last Man Standing, (excerpts) by Eric Breaux & Lo Fu productions , 2010 (30')

Dirty Cajuns is the name of his band. A fisherman, environmental activist and folk singer, Drew Landry is the Woody Guthrie of the bayou who made himself famous after testifying in front of a White House Enquiry Commission after the big oil spill of Louisiana. His song " BP Blues" has already reached cult status.

I Always Do My Collars First by Conni Castille & Allison Bohl ( 24') In English with French subtitles.

Would you believe it, a film about ironing? This is the first film by the talented feminine duo who made "Crawfish King", applauded in many film festivals including Cannes. It tells the story of four dynamic Cajun women demonstrating how this simple ritual weaves its way throughout the fabric of family life and their sense of identity.

Each August, for the past 17 years, thousands of people attracted by Cajun and Zydeco music will gather in the small town of Saulieu (Burgundy), France to share great moments of music, dance, cinema and gastronomy at the Cajun & Zydeco Music, Film & Food Festival.
In 2011, the Festival will celebrate its 18th anniversary, a good occasion for having a great time and great bands !

The stars of this year's 2011 edition will be

LEE BENOIT & the Bayou Stompers (USA)

JEFFERY BROUSSARD & the Creole Cowboys (USA)

Those musicians are among the most outstanding in Louisiana for their quality.

Supporting the great festival music line-up will also be River Zydeco Band (NL), Zydegonutz (NL), Colin & the Crawfish (GB), and the French groups of 4 Jeun's, Tous les Temps en Temps, Mousse Espagnole, Cajun Express and Blue Bayou.

The 11th edition of the Saulieu Louisiana Film Festival
, mastered by filmmaker Jean-Pierre Bruneau, will be presenting film projects of music, history and culture of South Louisiana on Thursday night 4th August.

An extensive training course of C/Z dance (conducted by dance instructor teams of Yann Manac'h, Marilyn Catrix, Sylviane Jean and Bernard Guihard) and cajun instruments (conducted by instructors
Gilles Kusmeruck , Vincent Giarrusso, Agnès Benar and Christian Gualdi) will be held on Saturday.
(see e-mail address above for registration)

As for gastronomy, Michael Richard, the well renowned Chef from Lafayette, Louisiana, will be cooking his Cajun specialties at the 'Espace Restaurant' on Saturday and Sunday.

Finally, the Festival will be extended beyond the regular weekend to Monday, August 8th where we will move several miles down the road for a 'Louisiana Night' at the club 'Le Cornemuse' in Arleuf (20 miles distance) where Zydegonutz (NL) and Colin & the Crawfish (GB). will perform again.

The Saulieu area has a lot to provide in regards lodging (top quality hotels, bed & breakfasts and campsites), food and landscapes (gentle mountains and lakes of the Morvan area). All the different festival locations are centered and can be reached on foot in less than five minutes. From the Paris airports, it's very easy to get to Saulieu by high speed train and bus.
